Equity Market Update for - May 16, 2008 

Equity Markets For The Day

The Sensex ended the day with a gain of 81.40 points, or 0.47%, at 17, 434.94 while the broad-based NSE Nifty gained 42.45 points, or 0.83% at 5,157.70.
Among the sectoral indices, BSE Metal and Bankex rose over 1% each, followed by Power (0.89%), Auto (0.57%), however IT declined 0.42%.
Among sectoral indices, the BSE CG index which gained 3.46%, followed by Realty (3.41%) and Oil&GAS (2.65%). BSE Bankex and Power rose over 2% each. On the other hand Metal and IT moved up 1% each.However, FMCG declined 0.21%. 

Among major gainers at the BSE Sensex include Ranbaxy, which gained 3.29%, followed by RComm (2.18%) and HUL (2.14%). HDFC Bank, Jaiprakash Associates, SBI, ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, L&T, M&M were other gainers.  

Losers at the BSE Sensex were Ambuja Cement and Infosys, which fell 1% each to close at Rs 110.90 and Rs 1871.15 respectively and HDFC declined 0.95% to Rs 2766.90. TCS, Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Wipro, ACC, BHEL were the other losers.

Out of the total 2,768 shares traded at the BSE, 1,547 advanced, 1137 declined while 84 remained unchanged.

G-sec market comments: Markets opened weak on tight liquidity& concerns of higher inflation & fell further after revision in earlier inflation nos.

The 10 year benchmark closed  at 7.94% against previous close of 7.87%.

Liquidity was tight with overnight rates climbing to 7.75% during the day.

Markets are expected to remain volatile& take cues from liquidity situation & auction results next week.
